Refuge 'Make The World A Refuge'

Director Georgi Banks-Davies pulled-in Simone to work with her on this gripping spot for Refuge. Simone and Georgi have worked together many times over the years, not least of all on Georgi's breakthrough series 'I Hate Suzie' which featured another phenomenal performance from Billie Piper. Simone worked with Georgi and DOP Patrick Meller to create a sophisticated grade that supported the heavy subject matter.

EA SPORTS FC 'FOR THE CLUB'

EA Sport are back with a star studded 90" advert for FC25! Directed by Rollo Jackson, using mixed media to tell the story of passion the fans have supporting their club. Feel all the emotions the game brings out of you. Sharing the unwavering commitment for each fans club! Graded beautifully by Dani here at TBA.

Nike 'Runners Gang'

Created by this new team fresh from Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg, as spec ads go, this is special! Director Elias and DOP Wesley made this incredible film in Marseille with a phenomenal cast and stunning locations. Ruth jumped at the chance to grade it and the results speak for themselves!

King She and Saatchi and Saatchi combine their creative strengths to transport us through a window to past lives celebrating 100 years of Never Knowingly Undersold for John Lewis.

Corner Shop director RELTA has made a really powerful film here, recording Ray BLK live in Edinburgh. The singer holds the audience and she sings about an abusive relationship. TBA's new colourist Dani Rotaru provides a sophisticated and beautiful grade.

Montefiore Einstein’s Cancer Center 'Spot it Early'

Seb Edwards beautiful film shows the birth of Breakdancing in South Bronx in the late 70’s on the same street as the Montefiore Hospital through to present day as it premieres as an event in the Olympics.

Awaken your madness with brilliant director Matilda Finn and footballer player Jamal Musiala as he turns your defenders into spectators. Frequent collaborator Matilda is back in with Simone to tie this beautiful 30" spot together.

Inspired by the incredible Angela Patton’s Girls for Change organisation the film follows the lives of four daughters of imprisoned fathers in the US. The film explores the need for the daughters to be connected to their fathers. Their need for that bond culminates in a father and daughter dance at the jail. No mean feat when you begin to understand how in-person visits are extremely rare. It’s a soulful experience. The film will challenge and educate as you experience and understand the universal human needs of these fathers and daughters. The depth and complexity of the issues these families face are treated with compassion and honesty from Natalie and Angela.

GRENADIER 'BLACK MIRROR'

The first campaign for the Ineos Grenadier conceived by the team at Wonderhood and directed by James and Mike through Art Practice.
The film is a call to arms to get up and explore new horizons. It was shot in a very wet Patagonia in southern Chile as well as the capital Santiago. Time Based Arts delivered the impossible one shot that takes us up, around and finally under the car, exploring it in every angle. The film forms part of a wider campaign with six stills from photographer Maria Lax.

Paralympics 'Considering What?'

This new Paralympics ad is challenging the patronising attitudes towards the athletes. The film shows Gravity, Friction and Time don't care about disability.

Following our collaboration on 4 Creatives' previous Super.Human film and Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui's Rising Phoenix feature doc this is the third time we've had the privilege to help promote the Paralympic movement.

NIKE FOOTBALL 'Awaken Your Madness'

Awaken Your Madness, this ad has definitely done that! This campaign featuring some of the biggest footballers at the moment Erling Haaland, Vini Jr & Kylian Mbappé. Directed by Sam Pilling with the help of the our vfx artists to make the madness come to life. This advert is a labour of love from everyone that worked on it. Enjoy this spot and be taken on the crazy journey of the intense, insane and crazy lifestyle these footballers endure for their sport.

Alzheimer's Society 'The Long Goodbye'

A heartbreaking story as a son says goodbye to his mother. A story sadly too familiar to anyone that has lost a loved one to the inexorable fate of dementia. Beautifully written and filmed.
Directed by Charlotte Regan utilising a mix of formats including Alexa, Super 8mm film and VHS to weave a visual tapestry of our protagonists lives.

Amazon - The Grit

How to Have Sex director Molly Manning Walker helms this new commercial for Adam & Eve DDB.
Recently signed to Rogue, Molly has filmed her ode to Women's football, a subject close to her heart, as a keen player and founder or Babe City FC.
Simone graded this warts 'n' all journey through the highs and lows of the beautiful game!

Carhartt WIP 'SS24'

Ruth worked with director Paul Hermann again on this colourful film. Paul and DOP Moritz created a set of double exposures that double the effect of the incredible photography.

THE KITCHEN

Working with Co-directors Kibwe Tavares and Daniel Kaluuya, Simone graded this portrait of a not-so-distant future. When the film closed the London Film Festival in 2023 it was heaped with praise, with special mention going to the overall look of the film, created in collaboration with cinematographer Wyatt Garfield, who's use of the camera grabs the viewer.

SKEPTA + RYDER + DRÉ-SIX 'ALL ALONE'

Ruth graded this stark and moody video for Skepta, Ryder and Dré Six. Director and editor Duncan Loudon, along with DOP Krzystof Tojnar, strip-back things to create a powerful and direct video.

BAFTA 'FOLLOW YOUR SPARK'

Director Jeaniq Amihyia inspiring new talent to follow their creative spark in this 90 second spot. The main theme is it doesn't matter who you are or where you come from everyone deserves a shot to let their spark manifest. Our very own Ruth Wardell brings these sparks to life in this spot with her amazing work as colourist.

Droga5 team up with Ian Pons Jewell this time and the results are mind-bending! Mike Tyson, Roller-coasters, Fireworks, Pyramids and so much more. Buckle up buttercup!

The Paul Canoville Foundation - Tied Together

Marking the collaboration between designer Nicholas Daley and Chelsea legend Paul Canoville, this film charts the influences behind the design. Director Samona Olanipekun and DOP Korsshan Schlauer (the dream team behind the short film 'i and i' that we worked on last year) capture the people, the style and the West London ends perfectly.

CHANNEL 4 'IDENTS'

The new Channel 4 Masterbrand idents have landed! Written as a reflection of modern Britain, the idents were created around five themes; Identity, The Land, System, Release and Love.
The unique collaboration between the amazing roster of directors at Art Practice, Love Song and our artists and makers here at Time Based Arts have brought 25 scenes together in a limitless looping tapestry with the iconic 4 mark at the heart. A combination of live action, animation and full CG films brings contrast and richness to the set.

Junodream - The Beach

This noir music video is surreal to say the least. Director Ned Botwood brings us to a day on the beach without the sun and psychedelic imagery in the dark. Brilliant paired up to the song and its lyrics. Its amazing what TBA's Ruth Wardell can do to a black and white colour palette!

Ebay 'Alex's Fathers Day Story'

Max graded this touching film for Ebay. Joakim Behrman directs this lovely tale of a son who's searching for the perfect way to show his love.

AMAZON PRIME 'GUARD'

Prepare to get hungry... In this ad we follow a night guard as he discovers his new passion of cooking and baking... all thanks to Amazon Prime. Director Michael Spiccia makes us care about our guards journey from seeing his sad packed lunches to cooking an amazing Victoria Sponge.

Kenzo - Sneaker 23

Frank Le Bon channels a beautiful 70s zoom lens vibe for this Parisian skate film for Kenzo. Max grades the evocative 16mm shot by Korsshan Schlauer.

SCRAPPER

Charlotte Regan's debut feature Scrapper is a breakthrough success winning 2023's Sundance World Cinema Grand Jury Prize for Dramatic Film.
The film deals with a 12 year old girls magically irregular view of the world after the loss of a parent. Charlotte's command of narrative and performance with the help of Molly Manning Walker's lens shine a colourful light on this distinctive drama.

This stunning new commercial for Virgin Atlantic embraces their new gender identity policy, in which staff can choose to wear whichever of its uniforms they feel most comfortable in. This not only breaks down barriers, but embraces diversity in the workforce. Graded beautifully by Myles, making those Vivienne Westwood designed uniforms pop!

Arctic Monkeys 'There Better Be A Mirrorball'

The Arctic Monkeys return with this their latest single. Continuing their love affair with Simone, the band and specifically Alex Turner, who directed this, create a nostalgia-tinged film document of the recording of the track.

RINA SAWAYAMA 'HURRICANE'

This is our third collaboration with Ali Kurr and Rina Sawayama for this powerful piece 'Hurricane'. Myles grades another slice of dust bowl Americana and Rina rocks raw power in the final part of the triptych.

REVOLUT 'YOUR WAY IN'

This exciting commercial burst onto our screens (quite literally) - smashing down the preconceptions around fintech. The film was directed by MJZ's Craig Gillespie of I Tonya, Pam & Tommy, Cruela and Lars and The Real Girl fame.

Carlsberg X Liverpool 'Forever Fans'

Lewis has graded this absolute gem for new-land director Tore Frandsen. It captures the madness of fans, pubs, the wins, the losses, the heartache, the lager. Smell the sweat and see the chips fly! Lovely work from Lewis to create subtle looks around each golden era!

ITV 'Breakthrough'

ITV's new campaign in support of MIND and YoungMinds focuses on parents awareness of their children's mental health.
This film was created by Uncommon Creative Studio and beautifully realised by thirtytwo. The carefully studied performances, lovingly shot on film by David Faulkes and the clever use of subtitles to reflect what is really meant help deliver the campaigns poignant message for us to keep talking.

BODYFORM '#PERIODSOMNIA'

Kim Gehrig returns to direct another iconic film for Bodyform. Created with AMV BBDO and Somesuch, the film deals with the brutal reality and downright discomfort of periods at night. Smashing taboos and coming at the theme in a typically leftfield style, this is no-holds-barred and as important as ever.

Booking.com 'It Starts with a booking'

As the Women's Euros kicks off in 2022, Booking.com have made this beautiful film with Natalie Rae at Object & Animal. Putting us squarely into the shoes (boots) of a young aspiring football star. Filmed in Greece and London, Natalie and her DOP Eira put us in an evocative first person POV. Simone worked hard to bring a natural rhythm to the grade that felt real and vibrant!

Rising Phoenix

Rising Phoenix is the latest feature documentary from film makers Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui, and our most recent collaboration. Having directed the BAFTA nominated portrait ‘McQueen’ in 2018, the duo have turned their attentions to the Paralympic Movement. The film charts the turbulent history of the Paralympic Games from its inception to the global pageant of London and Rio. It features several of the participants and their inspiring personal journeys to becoming elite athletes. It is a beautifully crafted and powerful documentary with an important message of human endeavour and achievement at its core.


Rising Phoenix is the second film that Time Based Arts has completed full picture post on. Conform, grade and a host of 2D, 3D and design work add to the spectacle of the story. Look out for the ancient statues depicting each of the athletes that feature in the film.

The film premieres on Netflix on the 26th August and celebrates the Olympic spirit in a week that would have seen us enjoying the drama of the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

F1 Season Launch 2019 'The Race Races On'

I'm driving up to Muswell Hill and my car's not quite a Jaguar, I bought it in Primrose Hill from Luca Badoer.
He was the worst F1 racing driver ever, started 50 races didn't score a point. So this film's for you Luca, you're definitely not in the highlight reel, maybe a YouTube one called Bangers and Shunts you even drove for Ferrari and couldn't get on the board. Honourable mentions for Taki Inoue, he was hit by the medical car twice in 1995 during the GPs of Monaco and Hungary and an apple that fell a long way from the tree and kept rolling down a hill was Jean-Paul Belmondo's son, Paul of course, who never scored a point in 27 races, 20 of which he didn't even qualify for.

Comic Relief 'Wise Words'

David Abrahams new agency Wonderhood Studios teamed up with our great friends, directors Will and Dylan to produce this beautiful film. Shot on 16mm by David Foulkes and starring Peter Mullan as the loving, doting grandfather imparting knowledge to his baby granddaughter. Wise words indeed.

Rina Sawayama ‘Cherry’

Lots of beige underwear, feathery capes, pinky hues and extravagant headdresses make up this very visually pleasing promo from Isaac Lock. Myles prepared himself for the grade by donning his own feather cape and lavish headdress. He then learned the choreography and performed for Isaac when he arrived for the grading session with the rest of the grading department acting as his backup dancers.

Nike 'Stop At Nothing'

Mike supervised this shoot in Milan. His penchant for pasta was his downfall though as he ploughed through several portions of pasta at lunchtime each day. Budweiser 'Wind Never Felt Better'

I once ran into Bob Dylan in the Stockport Aldi in the booze aisle. He approached me and asked me what I’d recommend to drink, I told him their Gin is excellent and they also do a great deal on Prosecco if that’s more his bag. Having had him initiated the conversation I felt enabled to ask the great man a question. I didn’t want to come over like a Superfan so I thought I’d ask a weird question. I plucked up the courage and said “What’s the best way to dry your clothes Bob?” and he replied “The answer my friend is blowing in the wind.” So Bob Dylan doesn’t use a tumble dryer. You heard that here first.

Argos 'The Christmas Fool'

The ancient Greek city of Argos was the birthplace of the heroic Perseus, beheader of Medusa and all round badass. It was also the site of the discovery of catalogue shopping which the ancient Argives used to buy all sorts of things from amphoras to temples. One of the many hellenic innovations made in Argos was the the concept of ‘Click and Collect’. Much like the platonic theory of forms it allowed its user to imagine any type of product and it would magically be available at a shop in a few days. Those Greeks were a pretty clever civilization!

Three 'Phones Are Good'

Remember a time without mobile phones? Josh and Luke do. Because they are Old with a capital 'O'. Digital Granddads the both of them. In fact the only way Josh can get hold of Luke is by phoning his parent's home phone number from memory and speaking to Mrs Todd to ask if "'Luke can come out to play." They then have to make rigid plans as to where to meet at a specific time because simple technology is beyond them. Luke is still amazed by light bulbs and Josh is constantly moaning about having to access the work server. He thinks it's something to do with tennis. Once they have finally worked out how to post produce a job they then have to get Old Man Gratt on the grade and here the problem gets even worse. Simone is still shocked when he sees cars on the road. He calls them "Horses with wheels" and is considering putting me on trial for witchcraft because I have a lighter in my pocket or as he calls it "The evil magic fire stick". What is amazing is that they got this job finished, because it's really bloody good in spite of their efforts to climb into the television box.

Libresse 'Viva la Vulva'

This highly original, ambitious, and creative ode to the vagina is TBA’s second undertaking with the equally ambitious and creative Kim Gehrig. It took a whole host of contributors and a lot of dedication to make this choir of vulvas a possibility and the result is a rather wonderful message that emanates the real power of female genitalia. Ever fascinating, these bearers of life and mistresses of pleasure are now capable of proclaiming their own self-worth through song and we love it. In a world where women’s lady parts are expected to be perfectly formed and immaculately plucked and perfumed, the film’s celebration of diversity is a welcome message. Funnily enough, it is often women who need to be convinced of the vagina’s unique beauty - men have been big fans for millennia. However, now that we are all in agreement, we can rejoice and proclaim…. Viva la Vulva!

Honda Dream Makers 'Jungle'

Who was your favourite gladiator? Don’t say Russell Crowe! I’m talking about the seminal TV show. Personally mine was Rhino, of whom I am reminded of in this great new spot for Honda. Rhino was awesome, he was more muscle than man and had those piercing eyes that chilled your soul to its core. He was also undefeated at the suspension bridge, what a legend. Rhino then made the jump into films and was in Argo, Zootropolis and the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean (You see that one? It was the really shit one until the last one came out). At school all the boys seemed to like Jet the most, many claimed to have ‘special’ dreams about her. My ‘special’ dream was when I got to dream about writing website blurbs no-one reads. Wolf was another crowd favourite but I always thought he was an idiot. One of my friends got his autograph at Elys department store in Wimbledon and he wrote “To Wolf Love From”. That’s even worse sentence structure than mine.

Honda 'The Road to Different'

Don’t you hate when you are driving down the road and all this kinetic type starts telling you that you are boring? It happened to me the other day when I was on the A60 to Worksop. It’s not my fault I was going to Worksop. It was my great-aunt's 90th birthday tea party and I had made a lovely lemon drizzle cake. I also took time to check out St Anne’s church that is noted for its organ. I found it fascinating. Worksop is also the birthplace of Bruce Dickinson, Donald Pleasance and Graham Taylor and you wouldn't call them boring. OK, maybe Graham Taylor. Look, anway I don’t know why you are calling the largest town in the Bassetlaw district of Nottinghamshire boring. That’s very rude of you Mr and Mrs Liberal Elite. Oh you’re not? Just me? OK, you might have a point.

Col3trane 'Britney'

Oscar Hudson’s new promo is an ode to LSD. Jack thought it was best to bosh a tab before grading it and discovered all these new colours that have never existed before. Once he had come to, he realised they were all just shades of yellow. Next Jamie stepped up for the conform and VFX, he too boshed a tab but unfortunately he had a bad trip which no amount of orange juice could help, he’s now gone feral and can be seen wild eyed in his magical poncho in Hoxton square feasting on pigeons.

ZOZO 'ZOZOSUITS'

ZOZO? ZOZO? Sounds like a french clown’s name maybe? Or an evil demon who only speaks in the third person. ZOZO MUST DRINK THE BLOOD OF A FRENCH CLOWN. ZOZO MUST POSSESS CREEPY CHILD FOR NEW HORROR FILM ON NETFLIX. ZOZO MUST REMEMBER TO PICK UP SEMI-SKIMMED MILK ON THE WAY HOME. Good old ZOZO.

Reebok

Do you know why the company is called Reebok? Apparently it’s named after the Afrikaans word for a South African Antelope. The word was found in an Afrikaans Dictionary one of the founder’s grandsons won in a running race. He must have been wearing a sick pair of Reebok Classics to achieve that win.

Arctic Monkeys 'Four Out of Five'

The name Arctic Monkeys has always confused me. Monkeys? In the Arctic? That seems a little inhospitable for those cute little poo throwing creatures. So I did some research. And in reality the most northerly monkey in the world is the Japanese Macaque, which my C in GCSE Geography means I know that Japan is not in the Arctic. But Macaques are those cool red faced critters that chill out in the hotsprings. They are pretty cool. I’m going to start a band called Japanese Macaques and our debut album is going to be called ‘Annoying Pedant’.

BBC Three 'Perfect Day'

In 1997 the BBC released its seminal promo for music featuring the great and the good of the music world. And Bono. Lou Reed’s Perfect Day had been popularized by the release of Trainspotting the previous year and the BBC used it brilliantly in their iconic ad which went on to be number one for three weeks. Now 20 years on BBC3 use it to show the diversity of their presenters and viewers. It’s beautiful and meaningful and it doesn’t have Bono in it. A win-win situation!

Nike 'Nothing Beats A Londoner'

Yes Fam! Wieden + Kennedy team up with Megaforce to bring their kinetic vision to this Nike spot celebrating how hard we Londoners are. Lenny McLean, Reggie Kray, Danny Dyer and Ray Winstone would need more than a tool to take on this crew of fit young Londoners spurring each other on to greater and more extreme heights. TBA took on the post for this epic 3 minute spot that features cameos from the worlds of Grime, TV and Sport. The advert zig zags across London like a caffeinated Uber driver in rush hour and there are more roadmen in it than there are resurfacing the North Circular when you are trying to get to Ikea to buy a Fado lamp. On top of this we learn the important life lesson never to pretend to be mates with Alex Iwobi if you want a good nights sleep. The only quibble you could have is that they chose to do a scene in Morley’s - Chicken Cottage is the choice of any discerning chicken connoisseur in the capital. However we will let them off because the result is just so good. Our amazing crew put Savlon on their blisters, rubbed some Deep Heat on their crotches and shot cortisone into their eyes to get this one across the finish line.

Corona 'Luck Doesn't Play'

Mexico don't need Luck to win the World Cup, not with Hernandez in their team. Oh and his missus' dad is the pub landlord at the Boleyn, he's got Corona on draught so no matter what the result there's a result.
William Armstrong teamed up with DOP Ben Fordesman for this beautiful World Cup tie in spot. With our Simone grading remotely to Mexico. Incidentally, remotely is how Simone's beloved Azzurri will be participating in this years World Cup, watching it all via a TV remote.

Audi 'Used Cars'

Sebastian Strasser understands obsession. You don’t get to his level of brilliance without having some. So comes this Audi spot that shows the obsession of a man wanting a new car. All he can see around him are Audi cars. In the end he breaks and orders one. He is very happy. Unless I got it all wrong and this is a trailer for a reboot of John Carpenter’s ‘Christine’ and the Audis are actually stalking him waiting for the perfect moment to strike. No I’m sure I was right the first time.

Directors Pensacola go full Colonel Kurtz in this lovely spot for Wieden and Kennedy London. Great sound design by Sam Ashwell @750mph. We love the smell of bacon in the morning

'My Turtle Dove'

Here at TBA we love it when one of our kids does some of their own art. So when our Nuke Artist/Professional Metrosexual Ralph Briscoe collaborated with his amazing partner Jay to make this short film we couldn’t be prouder. A real love letter to these shores that celebrates love and diversity and shows just what a positive society we are when we choose to be. Ralph and Jay have got a staff pick on Vimeo and a write up on David Reviews among other places. Turtle Dove is cockney for ‘Love’ so…. Would you Adam and Eve it?! Our China Plates Ralph and Jay have made a Lime Kiln about Exeter City in the Peter Kay and we Turtle Dove it!!!!!!!!!!

WWF #justlikeus

WWF and Anthony Dickenson continue their torrid affair as he makes his third film for the charity. WWF called up Anthony late one night and asked to be ‘taken back to the Tone Zone’. Anthony didn’t hesitate as he booked them a luxury safari holiday in Africa. But once there the romance died as they saw the extent of the Ivory trade in a local marketplace. Anthony knew he had to do something to get his charity back into that loving feeling so he called up Time Based Arts and asked us nicely to make some CG elephants. We always love helping a brother out, so said yes straightaway. Everyone got on board to push this heart rendering spot through to life. Except Jack who watched a Gus Van Sant film for a grade reference. He is a proper noddy.

Alt-J 'Pleader'

Isaiah Seret’s seminal piece for Alt J got all the departments at TBA into working overdrive. The narrative feels like it’s the Village of the Damned crossed with How Green is my Valley. Which are coincidently the words in the chorus. Feels like part of a larger project, with such a grand scale and story. Beautifully shot and masterfully directed, we are very proud of our work on this one!

Peaky Blinders Series 4

The Boys are Back in Town. No not a reference to Simone's questionable taste in music, but the Shelby clan descend onto our TV's again this November. Cillian Murphy and Tom Hardy are joined by Adrien Brody and Aidan Gillen in the all star cast.

Random Acts: An Isle Full of Noises

Jamie Whitby made this gorgeous film for Channel 4 and got David Oyelowo to recite Caliban’s soliloquy from The Tempest. Jack was all over this project because he’s dead cultured like. Inspired by the Shakespearean themes I have written a sonnet for you all;

There once was a man who’s second house was a shoe
And in the shoe there was a loo
And in that loo he did a poo
And that is why a poo is called a number two

I feel so cultured! Hang on, just been told it’s not a sonnet. And that it’s shit. OK let’s call it it a shonnet.

New York Bakery 'Edna'

thirtytwo jetted back from New York to finish off this great advert with Simone. Brilliantly shot on 35mm by Charlotte Bruus Christensen, we get to see a real slice of NY life. As they beavered away in the suite everyone got peckish working on bagels all day long so they ordered some for lunch. Dylan ordered a classic with salt beef, mustard and cornichons. A noble lunch for a noble man. Will went with smoked salmon on a bed of cream cheese seasoned with dill and cracked pepper. Elegance personified. Shirley went for egg mayonnaise with oregano, sprinkled with paprika. Fantastic taste. Simone on the other hand went for peanut butter with Skittles AND sardines AND wasabi peas all mushed up together. The man is a monster. And that is why we don’t let Simone cook for us. I do feel for his poor children.

Nike 'Smile'

This beautiful Nike film celebrates the career of the great Mo Farah and it shows the sacrifices and dedication needed to reach the top of your game. Much like Simone has done with colour. You don’t get to the top by occasionally looking at some Dulux swatches, no you need to live colour. Like today - Simone will only answer to the name Burnt Ochre. He spends every waking hour thinking colour - bar toilet times obviously, that would be weird. He has a tough regime of eye exercises which he is constantly doing, his eye muscles are Geoff Cape-esque, in Victorian England he'd be lining up alongside John Merrick in a freakshow. And all this to bring you the best colour possible. He needs to be knighted pronto.

Finish 'I Love Doing Dishes'

Dish washers are called dish washers but washing machines are not called clothes washers. What’s all that about? Surely that would make more sense?
Why don’t pizzas come in circular boxes?
Why do noses run but feet smell??
Why is mincemeat vegetarian but sweetbreads are meaty?
Who is spiking my coffee?
Why is the coffee mug now telling me to shut up and do some actual work?

Ben Moore Regal 'Is it still paint'

Directors Will and Dylan's sophomore films for Ben Moore bring to life a Dodo and some 80's exercise classes we'd rather forget. Thankfully Mad Lizzie and Mr Motivator weren't cast. We created a CGI Dodo and a grand master computer arm as well as colouring in these lovely spots.

Tate “Min Tanaka x Fujiko Nakaya”

Tate teamed up with BMW for this lovely chip featuring Japanese performance artist Min Tanaka dancing in a fog sculpture created by Fujiko Nakaya. The clip was directed by Ilona McIlwain at LEZ Creative and Jack was inlisted to bring his own performance to the video through the medium of colour. Jack often likes to hang out this mist in his dressing gown too so was able to give part of his very essence to the piece.

Nowness Untaggable: #city

Kibwe Tavares and Jonathan Gales of Factory Fifteen created this pagan ode to cities. Following 4 sets of women in four cities (La Paz, London, Tokyo, New Orleans) we get to see different subcultures documented and explored. Jack had a great time grading the film and talking about J.G Ballard. The clients managed to stay awake through his monologue to see his beautiful grade.

Super Bock '90 Anos A Fazer Amigos'

Delicious Portugeuse beer Super Bock has been brewing for a long time so they wanted to show this off and celebrate the different ages of pissed up people in Portugal. Simone jumped on the job eagerly with a beer in hand. The next day we found him shivering in the corner of his suite swearing never to drink again

Goldbricks In Bloom

Danny Sangra being the man of action that he is managed to raise the money, write direct and edit his first feature film. Having completed it he then managed to get the twin powers of Time Warner and Vimeo to do a joint release of it. The man is a genius and we are very proud to have twisted Jack’s arm to grade it! Only Joking Danny!

Adidas 'Pogba - Never Follow'

Adam Smith came in to grade his bonkers advert for Adidas featuring 89 million man Paul Pogba. Simone’s own football skills are the stuff of legend. Word on the street is that he once did FOUR keepie uppies IN A ROW. Proper tekkers skillz there. Unfortuantely his promising career was cut short by a freak combine harvester accident. But luckily those sexy Italian eyes were not harmed and he because the Colour grading powerhouse he is today. Basically the Paul Pogba of post production.

Sometimes Chinese

Sometimes Chinese - Leo Leigh is on a roll, a spring roll! hot off the success for his short film’Mother’ he has made this great short in conjunction with Channel 4’s Random Acts strand. Once again he has created some weird and horrific characters that embody elements of universal British traits, it is both sweet and sour. Like those pork balls. Jack really enjoyed working with Leo and cinematographer Stuart Bentley again, he’s the pancake that brings their crispy duck and hoisin sauce together. Having eaten takeaways in a Premier Inn he was able to draw on his experiences to bring the film to life.

Pearl and Dean 'Tumbleweed Trainer'

Thirtytwo have saddled up and crafted a wonderful spot for Pearl and Dean, a loving homage to the great Western's of Ford and Hawks.

Sheldon started chewing tobacco and talking with a drawl as he and the team created the stars of the spot - the unassuming tumbleweed. Simone really went to town with the grade and created two fantastic retro looks - the documentary style black and white 16mm and then glorious technicolor for the feature segments.

If only we could get him to take off his leather chaps now that the job has finished.

Hornbach 'Your project only belongs to you'

Ian Pons Jewell paints a portrait of male psychosis during home renovation in this spot for Hornbach through Anorak Berlin and Heimat.

Steve supervised the shoot before adding his own Flaming Galahs and Simone spent most of the grade researching and ordering cordless hand drills.

Hugo Boss 'The Scent'

Darren Aronofsky? Theo James? Hugo Boss? Bosh! Hello Dream Team!!!
Grey came to visit us to help them finish off their newest suave bad boy of a commercial for Hugo Boss’s scent.
Simone sprayed some classic Essex-Italian juice in the grade and Sheldon bought his Eau du Mick Dundee to the VFX.
A fine job done by all.

Mercedes “Time To Look Up Again”

Sebastian Strasser returns to Time Based Arts with another visual feast for a German car company - the man can’t help himself.
This time it’s Mercedes that gets to travel down the Strasser Straße.

Shot by Wolf of Wall Street’s Rodrigo Prieto, it tells the story of one man’s life growing from baby to adult.
We see his wonder as a child always looking up and seeing the joys of space and sky, filled with magical animals. As he ages his eye line lowers with the weight and responsibility of adulthood.
That is until he steps into his Mercedes Cabriolet and takes down the roof. He is forced to look up... and wonderment is restored once more.
Hope he keeps his eyes on the road though - that’s an accident waiting to happen. Silly sausage.

Peaky Blinders Series 3

Simone headed back to Birmingham for his third season of grading Peaky Blinders. Following on from his Televisual Grade of the Year for the first series, he has evolved the grade as the director and cinematographer has changed with each season.

This time it’s the fantastic Laurie Rose known for his collaborations with Ben Wheatley. And as if having Cillian Murphy and Tom Hardy wasn’t enough they’ve also added Paddy Considine to the mix. Snoop Dogg is a big fan and praise doesn’t come much higher than that.

Shell Helix Fire

Stink’s Aleksander Bach fresh from directing the feature ‘Hitman 47’ bought this spot for Shell Helix to Time Based Arts. Featuring a man who is definitely in a hurry. I know when I’m in Thailand cutting through a building site is my preferred short cut. Sheldon Gardner combined shoot supervision with the VFX supervising and managed to pop in having a child at the same time just to add a bit more stress. Jack McGinity graded this cinematic spot, helping to bring out the urgency of the mission and the heat. The dry dry heat of Bangkok. I’m sweaty just thinking about it.

Boots No7 - Lift and Luminate - Pas de Deux

Tom Harper teamed up with War and Peace alumnus George Steel to bring legendary ballerina Alessandra Ferri out of retirement for one last job.
She dances with a hologram of herself aged 19 in a fantastically stylish commercial.
Simone was on hand to bring it all to life in the grade.

My Theresa x Carolina Herrera: Something Unpredictable

Danny Sangra continues his relationship with My Theresa with another great fashion film this time for Carolina Herrera’s exclusive collection.
The story is a typically off kilter with some great Sangra wit as usual. Gold Lame´ hovering over a swimming pool is new to us too.

MEO Esta e a fibra dos Portugueses

Jose Pedro's beautiful film follows the fibre that brings us our tv programmes and our films and allows us to inhabit the world of these films as cartoons, samurai warriors, girls with guns and giant spacecraft crash into our lives. Graded by Simone remotely to Portugal.

Finish Powerball vs Ageing

The wonderful Spanish directing collective Canada joined forces with Weiden+Kennedy to make some pretty and clever spots for Finish Powerball. The two adverts ‘Heartbreak’ and ‘Ageing’ look at how we use crockery rather than the product itself.

They are eye catching and charismatic, with Simone Grattarola bringing out some lovely pastels to compliment Luke Todd’s VFX chicanery.

Let there be Colour!

Our grading team is led by Simone Grattarola. With 14 years experience Simone's extensive credit list includes award winning work for Peaky Blinders, BMW, Compare the Market, Nike, Lexus, U2 and Madonna.

The talented Jack McGinity was a colourist who Simone felt was essential to bring in to the new department. "It is obvious that Jack has a unique vision that makes him a brilliant colourist, his love and encyclopaedic knowledge of film and a brain chock full of ideas make him a real talent and a joy to work with. "We've added two new floors and more than doubled our capacity into a new building which adjoins the cottage. We've moved 3D to the top floor studio and have built a new vfx suite and two grading suites for film and commercials colour grading. We have two Da Vinci Resolves with Dolby 40 inch calibrated monitors. In addition Grade 1 has a four metre scope cinema screen, Christie 2k projector and 5.1 surround sound."

As the expansion has been ongoing we've already built up a head of steam with work for BMW, Honda, Finish, McDonalds, IKEA, Barclays, Umpqua, Samsung, Dropbox, Audi and BBC drama War and Peace.

War and Peace - BBC Worldwide

War and Peace is Leo Tolstoys epic saga set in Russia in 1805, on the brink of Napoleons invasion.

Tom Harper (The Woman In Black 2, Scouting Book for Boys, This Is England '86) directed the six and a half hour long series for the BBC and Weinstein Group.

Simone had worked with Tom and the cinematographer George Steel on a number of projects previously, including War Book, Black Mirror and Peaky Blinders. Their collaboration on this has resulted in glowing reviews across the board and is being broadcast on BBC1 from January 3rd 2016 and the A&E Network in the US on 18th January 2016. The series will also be available for BBC Worldwide.

WWF - "What The World Needs Now" Will Young - Anthony Dickenson

Anthony Dickenson teams up with WWF and Will Young for a stunning piece that highlights the perils our wildlife faces. Projections filmed in African vistas showcase both the animals and Will perfectly. To be honest when we first heard about the job we were excited about the prospect of working with Stone Cold Steve Austin but on reflection we wouldn’t have made him look as great as this.
A beautiful film and an equally beautiful track that's destined for huge exposure in the name of a good cause.

All Aboard! The Sleigh Ride- Preview - BBC Four

TBA graded a very interesting project for director Luke Martin and Garden Productions for BBC4. All Aboard! The Sleigh Ride is a 2 hour journey through the arctic circle powered by reindeer. All told in real time with just the natural noises as accompaniment, it’s BBC4’s second instalment of it’s Slow TV idea. As there was minimal light at this time of year so far north the journey is told through the different light as dawn breaks until it ends as the sun vanishes. So luckily the entire film is almost entirely shot at magic hour. It’s slow pace is mesmeric and truelly relaxing. Great christmas TV viewing.

NOS 'Um movimento que não pára de crescer'

A domino effect transforms Portugal into a country of vibrant colour in Marco Martins skilful commercial for NOS, Portugal's leading telecommunications company. From beaches in the Algarve to the centre of Lisbon we see the long line of the dominos fall. We colour graded the post remotely to our friends in Portugal.

BMW - X1 The Wave - Sebastian Strasser

Sebastian Strasser and BMW take us on another ride in this film for the all new BMW X1.

Following on from the success of the previous campaign we were asked to take the vfx out of the city and into the great outdoors.
The spot was shot throughout California on a road trip that took in Death Valley, Mammoth Mountain, Yosemite, San Fran and the redwood forests of Humbolt.

We follow an attractive couple who seem completely unconcerned that the world is undulating beneath them and have a great laugh driving around, speeding over bumps and avoiding cataclysmic impromptu waterfalls. Full visual effects post work was completed at Time Based Arts including a remote grade with LA.

Visit Scotland

The two Bens create a beautifully shot showcase for all that is great in Scotland, although they seem to have dropped the Irn Bru Factory shot?! Mike Skrgatic tears off his shirt, smears blue warpaint across his face and stands on his desk bellowing out Flower of Scotland everytime this clip is played.

José Pedros's beautiful paen to realtonships. Lovingly framed vignettes of people inhabiting their houses and homes. This IKEA spot promotes the desire of the people rather than specific objects of desire.

Nowness Define Beauty: Scratch’n’Sniff
